  • Run studs: exact spacing math, ceil(24′ × 12 ÷ 16") + 1. This part is arithmetic, not convention.
  • Adders (+2/corner, +4/opening for kings, jacks, cripples) are an uncited trade convention, labeled as such and not laundered into fact. Complex corners (California vs 3-stud) and wide headers change them.
  • Plates: single bottom + double top = 3× wall length (platform-framing convention). Blocking, fire-stops, and waste are not included, so add them per your plan.

Why This One Is Different

Openings are where your stud count gets complicated: a plain wall is just spacing arithmetic, but a window or door interrupts the run and needs its own framing, full-height king studs flanking the opening, shorter jack studs under the header to carry its load, and cripple studs filling the gaps above and below. This calculator's default of 3 openings adds four studs per opening on top of the exact run-stud figure, a widely used convention rather than a code-derived constant, shown as its own labeled line instead of hidden in one blended total. Wide openings, engineered headers, and corner details all change these numbers, so the calculator flags where your plan might diverge from default.

Where the Numbers Come From
