  • Run studs: exact spacing math, ceil(24′ × 12 ÷ 16") + 1. This part is arithmetic, not convention.
  • Adders (+2/corner, +4/opening for kings, jacks, cripples) are an uncited trade convention, labeled as such and not laundered into fact. Complex corners (California vs 3-stud) and wide headers change them.
  • Plates: single bottom + double top = 3× wall length (platform-framing convention). Blocking, fire-stops, and waste are not included, so add them per your plan.
  • A 2×4 is actually 1.5″ × 3.5″ (PS 20 nominal-vs-actual); layout math uses nominal OC.

Why This One Is Different

A 20-foot wall at 16-inch on-center spacing needs 16 studs before you've counted a single corner or opening: that part is arithmetic, not pricing. The pricing part is where most calculators go quiet: a framer's charged rate is not simply the number on a wage survey; that survey wage gets run through statutory burden and marked up to hit a margin. This tool keeps that chain visible instead of collapsing it into one dollar figure: it sizes stud and plate quantities the same way any framing takeoff does, prices 2×4×8 material against a sampled SKU, and shows a modeled labor band built from a published wage rather than a flat rate. Where the Numbers Come From

  • The published BLS wage for carpenters is straight-time gross pay only (no overtime, bonuses, or benefits), making it the bottom rung of a burden chain, not a chargeable rate on its own. Source: BLS, OEWS FAQ / methodology

Why is the labor cost shown as a range instead of one number?

Burden and markup both vary by region, shop type, and company overhead. Collapsing that into a single blended figure would hide exactly the part of a contractor quote that's actually negotiable.
