TPO Roofing Cost Calculator
1,204.16 sq ft of roof
12.04 squares (roof area 1204.16 sf = footprint × 1 slope factor); 1324.58 sf with 10% waste.
Typical crew rate for this trade: $37-$61/hr (modeled from BLS median wage × published burden/markup band). How we model costs.
- Sloped area = footprint × √(1+(rise/12)²) = 1200 × 1. Pure geometry: include eave/rake overhangs in your footprint or this understates.
- Waste: 10% for simple gable (JLC convention). Waste is a range by design; cut-up roofs can exceed 15%.
- Footprint estimation fails on complex plans (dormers, turrets, intersecting gables); measure each roof plane there instead.
- A 4/12-vs-8/12 pitch mistake is a 14% area error: verify pitch, don't guess it.

Why This One Is Different
TPO's defining trait is the seam, not the membrane itself. Panels are joined with a hot-air welder rather than glued or taped the way some single-ply systems are, which means the crew on your roof needs welding equipment and welding skill, and that shows up almost entirely in your labor line, not the material line. Like EPDM, TPO goes on a low-slope roof (this page defaults to 1/12, where the slope factor is a nearly flat 1.003) and is sold by the roll rather than the bundle. This calculator keeps the membrane-area math honest and builds labor as a modeled burdened-wage band, because a flat “$/sf installed” figure hides exactly the skill-driven cost that makes TPO pricing differ from EPDM's.
Where the Numbers Come From
- At low slope the area math barely moves off flat: 1/12 → slope factor 1.003, so a 5,000 sf footprint becomes 5,015 sf before membrane rolls are ordered. Source: slope-factor geometry, verified against Roof Online pitch-factor table / JLC Asphalt Shingles Field Guide
- TPO membrane is purchased by manufacturer-set roll width and length, not by the shingle bundle convention: the same roll-based purchase unit EPDM uses, distinct from asphalt shingle takeoffs. Source: trade convention, single-ply membrane purchasing differs from shingle bundle convention
- TPO seams are hot-air welded rather than adhered or taped, which requires welding equipment and trained crew: a labor-side cost driver this calculator folds into the burdened-wage model rather than the material line. Source: trade convention, TPO installation method (heat-welded seams)
- Labor is burdened wage (statutory adders, workers' comp, insurance, roughly 1.2-1.4× open shop, up to ~1.7× union) marked up to a charged rate, the same chain used across our roofing cost pages. More Questions
What's the minimum roof pitch for TPO?
TPO is a low-slope membrane system, commonly installed close to flat with drainage designed into the deck or tapered insulation. This calculator defaults to 1/12; confirm your actual roof design before ordering material.
